The Farewell Circuit - The Fineline in Minneapolis - 5/20/09
Today is May 26, 2009, and I’m about to sweep myself away to a little political rally where I plan on rallying about. And believe you, me – I know how to rally about!
I hear a lot about Maudlin from friends I know. Rumor has it they are unabashedly superstitious, terrific story tellers, and quite the live entertainers. They recently (or not so recently?) played a live set on a local community access station called Town Square Television. The band notes on their myspace blog that the station had the challenge of mixing them at 240 decibels, and hence, the outcome fell a bit short of the big budget, MTV bling bling projects. But who the hell wants those anyway?
I like Snow Patrol, but this is really a boringly conservative video. The song is also not an edgier composition by any stretch. Parents of blossoming young borang fans, have your children watch this video if you’d prefer them not watch this or this, or maybe even this.
The new video for the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s “Heads Will Roll” features Karen O. decked out in a sparkly little outfit, singing before a bunch of suits and dresses. It’s not long before a formally clad cadaver with bright red dancing shoes steals the show, and then, someone’s head. Bon appétit.
The Yeah Yeah Yeah’s play First Avenue on May 30, and word has it, the show’s out. Yet where there’s a will, there’s a way.
Today is May 25, 2009, and the word on the street is that a local venue is in some danger, and it’s not The Dinkytowner. It’s more important than that.
Just the other day I visited the Gear Daddies myspace page. They’re an Austin, MN band that had their modest share of success in the early 90′s, but like so many bands, weren’t able to maintain the momentum for the long term. But they’re champs to me, and to this day I hold that Martin Zeller has one of the coolest, most distinct voices in the Upper Midwest. Anyone who has attended an NHL hockey game in the last 10 – 15 years will probably rcognize the following song. I’m not sure if this is an official video, but it is at the very least fully endorsed!
Grizzly Bear’s new video for “Two Weeks” will probably leave you scratching your head. The demented psychology of A Clockwork Orange, the spiraling mania of The Shining, and the unnerving feeling of a growing evil in The Exorcist. All of these loomed large while I watched, and I came to this one conclusion: I just don’t understand all the stuff the kids are listening to these days. Call me gettin’ old, but I want horror movies to scare me, not everyone else’s latest, favorite indie band.
Grizzly Bear play the Cedar Cultural Center June 7.
