Today is June 30, 2009, and I am loving me this weather. I’ll have 65 degrees at the end of June along with my sugar and cream.
I don’t know Ari Herstand personally, but maybe someday I’ll make the acquaintance. In the meantime I (as well as you) can get little snippets of his life via Ari TV. For instance, in the following episode Ari visits Boston, wastes a bunch of time talking about Starbucks and McDonald’s, and then gets shat on by a bird. All sorts of awesome. And hey, at least if you feel like you’re squandering your precious life away while watching, he was honest and up front with you from the beginning!
Thanks Ari.

The Heavy’s video for “Sixteen” was shot on Coney Island, before roller coasters and ferris wheels. Gotta love the graffiti and phony palm tree.
The Heavy will play the Fine Line Music Cafe on July 6. “Sixteen” is off The Heavy’s forthcoming sophomore album The House That Dirt Built, due out October 6. See other concert dates HERE.
With all of the Canadian jokes floating around, it’s funny to think back to last year when many Americans were threatening to move up there, depending on the election out come. Well we’re all still here, and we can get a feel for the goods Canada has to offer without leaving the country. The Weakerthans have been praised by one critic as, “the best band from Canada” (Isolation). They have a pop punk side that maintains high energy, but it’s the down tempo side that reveals their poetic song writing. The songs are smart, introspective, and assume the same of its listeners. You can expect that range from front man John Sampson, former bassist of Propagandi. On Sept. 26th at the Triple Rock Social Club a piece of Canada comes to us.
Today is (was) June 29, 2009, and pleasantly cool in the Twin Cities!
While surfing about I happened upon this video by Simian Mobile Disco that really got me hoppin’. The tune is “Audacity of Huge” off their Temporary Pleasure album, and I thought you might enjoy it. That is, if you’re really into rocking 80’s sounding New Orderish electronic, but enough with the adjectives. Just press play.
The times they are a changin’. We know this when a text book classic rock band can be defined as indie, because after all, they’re on an indie label, and probably proud of it. But UK’s The Answer aren’t self-identifyingly indie - they call themselves a classic rock band, and that is truth in advertising.
Having read pages from both the Led Zeppelin and AC/DC playbooks, these guys will put the balls to the wall at the Triple Rock Social Club on Aug. 20. And speaking of AC/DC, The Answer has just recently been opening for the self proclaimed writers-of-one-song-122-times. Not to discredit AC/DC (alright, maybe I am), but The Answer has a song writing depth surpassing. Listen to these.
Jim Walsh (aka The Mad Ripple) brought his friends Martin Devaney, Eliza Blue, and Little Man into the Current Studios to do a little rendition of a song called “Banjo Lisa.” The Walsh led Hootenanny has been increasingly a community staple of our local music scene, inviting one and all to come together with a spirit of comraderie and enjoyment through music. In recent months the Hootenanny has been held at the Beat Coffeehouse, but The Mad Ripple Myspace page notes that upcoming dates include Friday night’s July 3 and July 10 at The Music Box located near 14th and Nicollet in south Minneapolis.
Check out this trailer for the October 9 release of Woody Harrelson’s attempt at one-up’ing Milla Jovovich. He won’t be successful, I can tell you that without seeing the movie, but damnit, who doesn’t want to see a splatterfest with Van Halen’s “Everybody Wants Some” blaring on the overhead?
Watch for the “zombie kill of the week.” It’s so rich!
L.A.’s the Silversun Pickups will be pulling into the State Theatre in August and the wise rock fan snatches the ticket early. Oddly enough, I might have expected a First Avenue show for the indie rockers, but perhaps our storied local venue wasn’t quite large enough? This may have been the case, considering the group has been hanging out comfortably on the CMJ top list for, oh, awhile now.
Haven’t heard the Silversun Pickups yet? If you’re a Current listener you just may recognize this first track.

Welcome to Borangutan! We're a group of writers, photographers, and music enthusiasts who'd like to give the MN rock n' roll scene (and you) a little bump. Despite the growth of social media and networks online, it often seems harder than ever to figure out what exactly is going on in the rock 'n roll world, especially in our own backyard! We want to be your ticket to everything rock in Minnesota, and we intend to continue growing and developing this site upon a single idea - rock promotions. And if through our efforts bands sell more albums, venues sell more tickets, and listeners become fans, then this will all have been worth it.
