The Answer Tour Dates, Coming to the Triple Rock Social Club, Aug. 20

Author: Skelly June 29th, 2009

l 9c487ee02b6a42fba568e7759a5a5a8f The Answer Tour Dates, Coming to the Triple Rock Social Club, Aug. 20The times they are a changin’.  We know this when a text book classic rock band can be defined as indie, because after all, they’re on an indie label, and probably proud of it.  But UK’s The Answer aren’t self-identifyingly indie –  they call themselves a classic rock band, and that is truth in advertising.

Having read pages from both the Led Zeppelin and AC/DC playbooks, these guys will put the balls to the wall at the Triple Rock Social Club on Aug. 20.  And speaking of AC/DC, The Answer has just recently been opening for the self proclaimed writers-of-one-song-122-times.  Not to discredit AC/DC (alright, maybe I am), but The Answer has a song writing depth surpassing.  Listen to these.

The Mad Ripple Hootenanny – Jim Walsh and Friends Perform in the 89.3 The Current Studios

Author: Skelly June 29th, 2009

Jim Walsh (aka The Mad Ripple) brought his friends Martin Devaney, Eliza Blue, and Little Man into the Current Studios to do a little rendition of a song called “Banjo Lisa.”  The Walsh led Hootenanny has been increasingly a community staple of our local music scene, inviting one and all to come together with a spirit of comraderie and enjoyment through music.  In recent months the Hootenanny has been held at the Beat Coffeehouse, but The Mad Ripple Myspace page notes that upcoming dates include Friday night’s July 3 and July 10 at The Music Box located near 14th and Nicollet in south Minneapolis.

Terrific performance, thanks guys!

Zombieland: Nothing Rock ‘n Roll’s like the Undead and Van Halen

Author: Skelly June 29th, 2009

Check out this trailer for the October 9 release of Woody Harrelson’s attempt at one-up’ing Milla Jovovich.  He won’t be successful, I can tell you that without seeing the movie, but damnit, who doesn’t want to see a splatterfest with Van Halen’s “Everybody Wants Some” blaring on the overhead?

Watch for the “zombie kill of the week.”  It’s so rich!  😉

Silversun Pickups Tour Dates, Coming to the State Theatre, Aug. 10

Author: Skelly June 29th, 2009

l 5f76117e77ac2c125e58178428c48acf Silversun Pickups Tour Dates, Coming to the State Theatre, Aug. 10L.A.’s the Silversun Pickups will be pulling into the State Theatre in August and the wise rock fan snatches the ticket early.  Oddly enough, I might have expected a First Avenue  show for the indie rockers, but perhaps our storied local venue wasn’t quite large enough?  This may have been the case, considering the group has been hanging out comfortably on the CMJ top list for, oh, awhile now.

Haven’t heard the Silversun Pickups yet?  If you’re a Current listener you just may recognize this first track.

Tracks: Two Harbors, and The Idle Hands

Author: Skelly June 29th, 2009

(Tracks is a weekly (or bi-weekly) feature on Borangutan that showcases local artists and their recent album. Many local artists generously donate their music to Borangutan writers, and part of our mission is to take that music and place it in your ears. Voila!  Each feature offers a free, limited-time mp3 download (one track) from the highlighted artist’s album, and links to where you can listen to or purchase more.)

All The Places We Would Rather Be: Two Harbors

After releasing a self-titled debut album in 2006 under the name Colonial Vipers Attack, Two Harbors members Chris Pavlich, Kris Johnson, and Shawn Grider reformed the group with bassist Jeremy Bergo to release All The Places We Would Rather Be.  The band was determined to make a record that captured their live spirit and depth (Two Harbors Myspace), and by all accounts All The Places We Would Rather Be does just that.

Two Harbors have recently been featured on 89.3 The Current’s local show with David Campbell.  The band’s first single “You Pulled The Rug Out” has also received regular airplay on 89.3 The Current.  You can catch them next at susstacular! on July 11th.

Follow Two Harbors or listen to more music on Myspace, Facebook, and Twitter.  Pick up your copy of All The Places We Would Rather Be at susstones or at The Electric Fetus or Cheapo Discs.

The Idle Hands new album The Hearts We Broke On The Way To The Show will not be officially released nationally until September 8, but already cuts off the preceding Loaded EP are making their way onto radio stations and iPods.  In the months leading up to all the recent buzz, The Idle Hands have done live, in-studio performances on both the UofM’s Radio K and 89.3 The Current’s local show with Chris Roberts.  Their first single “Loaded” was featured as “song of the day” on The Current, and it has received healthy rotation on that station as well.

You can follow The Idle Hands on Myspace and Facebook.  Purchase your copy of the Loaded EP on iTunes. The Hearts We Broke On The Way To The Show is also currently available locally for purchase at both The Electric Fetus and Cheapo Discs, a special pre-release treat for the local listeners the band loves.  Check the band out on July 12 at Barbette’s Bastille Days.

The following track “Secretary” is off The Hearts We Broke On The Way To The Show and is not found on the Loaded EP. The single “Loaded” is found on both the EP and the new LP.

Read What We Read – Michael Jackson, Fleet Foxes, and Story of the Sea

Author: Skelly June 26th, 2009

Today is June 26, 2009, and I still can’t believe Michael Jackson is dead.

This, even after being bombarded with nothing but King of Pop news all day long.  Coming from someone who spends an unhealthy amount of the day keeping up with the news, people really weren’t talking about much else.  One thing that did make me smile amongst all the sadness was this.  I forgot just how good his moves really were.
