The Spill Canvas on tour

Author: Schwaz June 18th, 2010

spillcanvas The Spill Canvas on tour

Hailing from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, The Spill Canvas played at the Triple Rock a couple weeks ago.  Playing an hour’s set, band members Nick Thomas, Joe Beck, Dan Ludeman and Landon Heil reawakened the raw appreciation for the grunge sound, with their suggestive yet explosive drums and bass guitar.

A slightly hypnotizing sound reminiscent of a gentle head massage, their music demonstrated an emotional depth and maturity intermixed with a romantic appeal especially in the stripped down acoustic songs.

Halfway through the show, opening band member Tyler Hilton joined the musicians on stage. Tyler sang with Nick Thomas, while Joe Beck, Dan Ludeman and Landon Heil goofed around, one of them suddenly appearing in a black raincoat, carrying an umbrella and a water gun. These boys have a good time on stage and it is reflected in their musical style. An engaging band with a positive message, perfect for an easy-going, warm summer night.

Fjord Rowboat “Cottonwood Glacier”

Author: Skelly June 15th, 2010

FjordRowboat UnderCoverOfBrightness 250 x 224 Fjord Rowboat Cottonwood GlacierIn the constant mania that is my life of searching for all things local-rock-and-roll-cool, I often overlook stuff tossed at me from abroad.  But an album called Under Cover of Brightness was just dropped today from a little band out of Toronto, Canada named Fjord Rowboat.  Hmm… yes, I know – a name that evokes the oft heard “that’s different” from a Minnesotan.  Are you a sucker for Echo and the Bunnymen?  Then you may just dig these guys like I do, especially a tune known as “Cottonwood Glacier.”

Ah, you’re stricken with anticipation aren’t you? icon wink Fjord Rowboat Cottonwood Glacier

Red Pens “Hung Out” Live

Author: Skelly June 15th, 2010

This was recorded waaaaaaay back in January at New Band Night in the main room of First Avenue, but rather oddly, it has just now popped up in cyberspace.  I love great live footage, but all too often it’s just too darn difficult to track down.  How thankful I am  then that this one fell solidly in my lap!  Thanks MNOriginal, we ♥ Red Pens.

“All My Friends” mp3 Download – Fort Wilson Riot

Author: Skelly June 15th, 2010

FWR Promo Photo 1 200 x 280 All My Friends mp3 Download Fort Wilson RiotMinneapolis’ Fort Wilson Riot are poised to release their second full length album entitled Predatory/Prey this July, and as a lead up to its release (and a string of hot local shows) they’re tossing their new single out there for one and all!  The new tune is “All My Friends,” and as FWR’s Amy Hager explains, the concept for the song arose while on a vacation to Central America.

“…I was joking around with a friend that I didn’t even know what I looked like anymore, because there were no mirrors, and then I just look at you and yeah, I look OK, and we were cracking up about it the whole trip. Everyone else represents who you are after you’ve been friends.”

Be sure to catch Fort Wilson Riot at the Stone Arch Festival this Sunday, June 20, at 2:15PM.

“Hard As Nails” Video – Peter Wolf Crier

Author: Skelly June 14th, 2010

Peter Wolf Crier’s “Hard As Nails” video is the latest release from local video virtuosos Northern Outpost.  The video premiered last Friday on stereogum.com (yes, I know – how mainstreamy, but the exposure is cool nonetheless).

Northern Outpost productions just keep getting better and better, and if you haven’t checked out their back catalog yet, hop to it!

Grain Belt Records Interview on The Local Show

Grain Belt Records Grain Belt Records Interview on The Local Show

I heard this a couple months back, but just recently I happened upon it again and realized how rare of a bird it actually was!  Mike Boeser from Grain Belt Records stopped in for a chat at The Local Show with David Campbell last March.  In a time when small record labels live and die often (and even more often without notice), it’s nice to hear of a modern success story.

That it’s a local Twin Cities record label just makes it that much better, and that it’s a close friend makes it sweet.  Set aside an hour and give this a listen.  In addition to the bits about the label itself there are some great tunes included from the likes of Red Pens, Brad Senne, Minor Kingdom, and Communist Daughter.
