The Alarmists, Greycoats, and The Invincible Kids at Sauce (07/18/09)

sauce IMG 0190 The Alarmists, Greycoats, and The Invincible Kids at Sauce (07/18/09)Sauce has been doing a terrific job booking thus far, showcasing some of the best bands in the Twin Cities the last few weeks.  Two weekends ago I attended Susstacular, and now this past week I spent four quality hours with The Alarmists, Greycoats, and The Invincible Kids.  I’m a true fan of both The Alarmists and Greycoats, and much cyber ink has been spilt on Borangutan about these two bands.  One only need dump their names into our little site-search box and view the results.  You’ll find an interview with Eric Lovold from The Alarmists, another with Jon Reine from Greycoats, and coverage of shows by both The Alarmists and Greycoats.  Both bands gave Sauce a good shaking, although admittedly, the contrast between The Alarmists driving rock and Greycoats smoother side was an awkward transition.  Nonetheless, a fine evening!

Yet despite the title of this article, it’s not really about The Alarmists or Greycoats.  It’s about The Invincible Kids.  There are countless young bands sharpening their edges in the cities like steel on whetstone.  It’s impossible to keep up with, and out of five new stones I might gather, four are cast aside for a single gem.  The Invincible Kids are a gem, finely hewn and fit for high placement on your local playlist.

The Invincible Kids

The power trio will make you dance, they’ll make you jump, they’ll make you forget that odious lump of a boss you have.  This is a perfect combination of 80’s new wave sensibility, 90’s devil-may-care crunch, and 21st century style.  The recently groomed lead singer (Drew Everett Phillips) reminded me so much of Sam Endicott from The Bravery, the best of everything someone might like from the last three decades of style and presence.  Cristos Lymperopoulos could just as well play guitar for Green Day or The Offspring and neither would be worse for it, and Adam Platenberg’s drumming injects the precise voltage necessary to electrify the songs.

But as always, don’t just take my word for it.  Press play above (if you haven’t already), then hit The Invincible Kids Myspace page, and then their next show.  I’ll save you a spot in the front row.

TIK is quite possibly the best band that nobody really knows about in this town… at least yet…

I had the pleasure of seeing The Alarmists twice that day and The Invincible Kids were the cherry atop my music parfait.

The I-Kids are a fantastic band with an infectious on-stage personality. I brought an accomplished blue guitarist with me to the show, who I would consider a tough sell, who just loved them too.

Can I also share that both of these bands use their talent to better their community by playing in shows for charitable causes? Uber cool.

Bands that aren’t strictly into the gratuitous self-promoting line of work may always stand exalted on the Borang site. It’s great to know we have artists like The Alarmists and TIK working hard in and for our communities.

A bluesman digging TIK? Sweet. ;)
